1) Pho
If you’ve never tried Vietnamese cuisine before, starting with the national dish is a good a place to start as any. Aromatic and super nutritious, this rice noodle soup comes in loads of different forms, but is most commonly served with beef, chicken or shrimp. Comforting, low in fat, full of vitamins, the only thing you should be asking yourself is where you can find your nearest Vietnamese restaurant.
2) Summer rolls
So much more than just a side dish, summer rolls are the healthier alternative to their much loved Chinese cousins, the spring roll. Just like a spring roll you’ll find veggies, noodles and meat all packed into a tiny tasty parcel, but instead of being deep-fried, summer rolls are wrapped with light rice paper and served cold. Team yours with peanut sauce for a gluten free starter, or add them to a soup or main meal to pack in even more flavour.
3) Papaya salad
A bright, tasty alternative to a soggy caesar salad, you’ll find a new favourite in Vietnamese papaya salad. A little more delicate than the Thai variations you’ve probably tried before, the Vietnamese version packs a punch with tangy herbs and barbecued meat, topped off with the zesty sweet taste of papaya.
4) Tom yum soup
If you’re counting calories a tom yum soup is the perfect takeaway to order tonight. Whilst it might be low in flat, this sweet, sour, aromatic soup is anything but low in flavour. Loaded with ginger, lemongrass, lime, coriander and chilli, your tastebuds are in for a spice sensation with every spoonful. If you’re vegan, remove the meat and opt for rice noodles for all the takeaway flavour you crave, with none of the meat or dairy.
5) Bun cha
Chargrilled pork, fresh herbs and beansprouts come together to form bun cha, all topped off with a spicy, acidic dipping sauce. Bun cha is usually served across loads of small dishes, so it’s a great dish to order in with friends.
